Jal Mahal Palace

 
jalmahal-jaipur.jpgThe secluded floating palace was built by Sawai Madho Singh in 1799 AD. It was once a place for duck shooting parties, where royal dignitaries bang the ambiance with vibrant activities. Many believe the palace as a ship on the serene Man Sagar Lake and therefore plan to enjoy wintry days in and around it.
During winter season, the magnificent fort caste a magic spell in the Jaipur. A variety of migratory birds twitters at the lake and create a romantic atmosphere around the picture post card Mahal. An evening sight worth more then a million dollar. The golden sky appears like mingling with the turquoise water of the lake, with beholding the Mahal at the backdrop.

Once a Summer resort for Royal Kings and Queens, Jal Mahal is built in an impeccable fusion of Indo-Mughal style of architecture. Its first four floors are immersed inside water, while its top floor is visible from distance apart. The red sandstone building is surrounded by the Nahargarh hills on all side and history says, that the lake was formed by constructing a dam between the two hills.

Nahargarh Fort

nahargarhfort jaipurThe famous Nahargarh Fort in Rajasthan is located on the sheer rugged parapet of Aravali Hills forming an impressive northern decor of Jaipur. The Nahargarh Fort, also known as the Tiger Fort was strategically exigent and was built as a means of cushioning Amer. The older parts of the fort succumbed to the blitzkrieg of time but the newer additions are simply mind blowing. Built by Sawai Raja Jai Singh in the year 1734. A royal retreat for the Maharanis, it was also used as a personal treasury for many years. Originally called Sudarshan Garh, it affords a splendid view of Jaipur. Beyond the hills of Jaigarh, stands the fort of Nahargarh like a watchful sentinel guarding Sawai Jai Singh's beautiful capital. Much of the original structures are now in ruins, but the lovely buildings added by Sawai Ram Singh II and Sawai Madho Singh II in the 19th century are preserved in a good condition.

Jaigarh Fort

jaigarh-fort.jpgJaigarh Fort is situated in the top of hill popularly known as Cheer ka Teela (Hill of Eagles), it is also known as “Victory Fort” located around 15kms from Jaipur in Rajasthan. Jaigarh Fort is in the top of the hill while Amber Fort is at the bottom. However, both the forts are connected through well guarded passage. The view of the fort is very spectacular.

This Jaigarh Fort was mainly build to tighten the security of Amber and Jaipur, so you may not find this fort very artistic as the other forts, but the fort has its own charm. The fort comprises of structures from the medieval era which is worth seeing. It includes several granaries, palaces, tall tower, temples and planned cannon foundry. Jaigarh Fort served the purpose of artillery production of the Rajputs.

Hawa Mahal

hawa-mahal-jaipur Hawa Mahal also known as Palace of the Wind, is a magnum opus of Rajput artistry. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh constructed the palace in 1799. This 5 story magnificent palace built in red and pink sandstone is exquisitely bordered with motifs painted with quick lime. Hawa Mahal is an indispensable part of the City Palace, a dilatation of the Zenana Mahal a women's chambers, standing away from the main complex. The Mahal with a marvelous panorama of Jaipur City and kaleidoscopic view of market place was primarily entrenched with the aim of enabling ladies of the royal court to watch the royal processions and other activities on road without being seen by others.

Amber Fort

amer-palace-jaipurThe delicate pink fortified palace was built in 1592 by Maharaja Man Singh I. Amber, pronounced Amer, was the ancient capital of Jaipur.
Amber Fort is among one of the best hilltop forts in India, it is carved into the hillside and the reflection of the fort is vivid in the Moata Lake. Tourists can climb up to the fort from the road or take a turn in the jeeps that travel up regularly or for even more excitement, ride one of the elephants.
The Jaleb Chowk is the first court inside Amber Fort and it is filled with souvenir shops and decorated elephants. Next is the Shila Devi Temple, dedicated to the goddess of war, Kali. To the left of the temple is the Hall of Public Audience (Diwan-i-Am) with decorated walls and terraces that are frequented by monkeys.
Further in the Fort is the Sukh Niwas (Hall of Pleasure), next to the third courtyard filled with flowers, that has a channel that used to carry cooling water. The Temple of Victory (Jai Mandir) is near the Maharaja's private apartments. The decorative panels and colorful ceilings are noteworthy and Jai Mandir provides excellent views of the palace and the lake below.

City Palace

This grand palace, built in the early 18th century, has seen a lot of additions and modifications by the successors of Maharaja Jai Singh II. The palace is established over a wide area and covers as much as one seventh of the total walled city (old Jaipur). The foundation of City Palace was laid at the time when the city of Jaipur itself came into existence. The area covered by the City Palace is around one seventh of total area of the Jaipur. Though the foundation was laid in the 18th century itself, further additions and modification in the palace complex continued for the next two centuries.

Laxmi Narayan Temple

The temple’s holy saints (or gurus) impart spiritual teachings among the young and the old. Today, Shri Swami TriVikramacharaya holds administrative powers to the temple's solemn throne.

Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh

Here, the queen used to spend time in the lap of nature, away from the political machinations of the royal palace. For centuries, the garden offered a retreat to the crowned heads and royal ladies, but at present everybody can enjoy this exotic and refreshing garden.

Govind devji temple

Sawai Jai Singh installed the image of GOVIND DEV JI(an incarnation of lord Krishna) after it was brought from Vrindavan. Housed within the sanctum of this spire less temple, the patron deity of the royal family is very religiously worshipped by most of the Hindus in the city and near by areas. The image is unveiled seven times daily for 'AARTIES' and BHOGS offered in the silver wares, consisting of sweets mostly. The idols of RADHA KRISHNA are dressed in different styles each time for the 'AARTI' procession where thousands of followers or 'Bhakt' gather around the courtyard for the Darshan (a look connecting them with the divine).

According to a legend, Govind Dev Ji appeared in the dream of Raja Sawai Jai Singh and asked him to bring his idol from Vrindavan to Jaipur. As a consequence, Raja Sawai Jai Singh brought the idol and placed in the City Palace complex of Jaipur. After the sad demise of Jai Singh, many successors acquired the throne, but Raja Man Singh took the initiative to build the temple in 1890.

Cenotaphs of Gaitore

images/gaitore-jaipur.jpgGaitore is situated on the Jaipur-Amber road, about 15 kms from Jaipur. Gaitore is a royal cremation site of the majestic rulers of Jaipur. There is a cenotaph for each Maharaja, built in his honor. These royal cenotaphs of the Maharajas are commonly known as 'Chhatris'. The royal chhatris are engraved with typical Rajasthani carvings. Gaitore is regarded to be the mispronounced form of a Hindi phrase 'Gaye ka Thor' which means 'resting place of the departed souls'.

The cenotaphs are erected with a perfect blend of architectural essentials of Islamic tomb architecture and Hindu temple architecture. Amongst all the cenotaphs, the one dedicated to Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II appeals the most. This Chhatri is built in pure white marble, ornamented with delicate carvings, peacocks and beautiful designs.
